I was 13 when I first read LOTR, and this scene for me, it was very odd. Odd indeed because when I was that young I did not understand friendships at all, or relationships for that matter (not to mention I don't understand them even now that I'm almost 25), but it seems to me that this is... well, I don't quite have the words, because in the society I grew in, people who read this book questioned their "friendship" or "master/servant" roles, and I often been told by nonrelated Tolkien fans that they are queer, as in gay. Even though I grew under the rule 34 of the internet and I admit, I did drew slash with Frodo/Sam (I regret nothing), but since I've stopped doing that, it's all the same. I still think their friendship is odd, according to the conformist society that Romania had, and still has.

"He was naked, lying as if in a swoon on a heap of filthy rags: his arm was flung up, shielding his head, and across his side there ran an ugly whip-weal.
‘Frodo! Mr. Frodo, my dear!’ cried Sam, tears almost blinding him. ‘It’s Sam, I’ve come!’ He half lifted his master and hugged him to his breast.
Frodo opened his eyes.
‘Am I still dreaming?’ he muttered. ‘But the other dreams were horrible.’
‘You’re not dreaming at all, Master,’ said Sam. ‘It’s real. It’s me. I’ve come.’
‘I can hardly believe it,’ said Frodo, clutching him. ‘There was an orc with a whip, and then it turns into Sam! Then I wasn’t dreaming after all when I heard that singing down below, and I tried to answer? Was it you?’
‘It was indeed, Mr. Frodo. I’d given up hope, almost. I couldn’t find you.’
‘Well, you have now, Sam, dear Sam,’ said Frodo, and he lay back in Sam’s gentle arms, closing his eyes, like a child at rest when night-fears are driven away by some loved voice or hand.
Sam felt that he could sit like that in endless happiness; but it was not allowed. It was not enough for him to find his master, he had still to try and save him. He kissed Frodo’s forehead. "

In the United States, we call this sort of thing "bromance." It's basically when two male friends are really close on an intimate level, without it necessarily being sexual.

I feel like nowadays western men are subconsciously indoctrinated into feeling ashamed about the mere idea of being intimate with each other, like hugging, holding hands, kissing each other on foreheads, or even sleeping in the same bed together (not like that).

But yeah, the reason why men don't do that is for fear of being labeled as "gay." Men shouldn't have to feel ashamed of sharing intimate gestures with another male whom they consider a friend, or perhaps even a brother.

I think that's the kind of relationship Sam and Frodo may have. It's the kind that isn't exactly romantic, though not entirely platonic, but rather kind of unique in it's own way. They're definitely still 'friends,' but they're very close on an emotional level.

Perhaps in the shire, being intimate and affectionate with one another is so commonplace that it's normal to them. That idea alone doesn't surprise me.
